Joe Smithson will be presenting at our September ABCD SW OH meeting. Geotechnical aspects of bridge design and construction can be critical items from a cost standpoint as well as long-term bridge performance. A thorough geotechnical evaluation as well as clear plan development makes construction easier and less costly. The geotechnical requirements necessary for good plan preparation of a structure will be discussed, including common deficiencies in the geotechnical report and common design conflicts observed across District 8. Additionally, the complex subsurface conditions in the Cincinnati area have required ODOT District 8 to develop project specific strategies to mitigate geotechnical issues. The presentation will discuss the use of pile setup and surcharge loading that have successfully been implemented on several District 8 projects. The latest updates to the Bridge Design Manual regarding foundations and retaining walls will be touched upon as well.
Networking and registration will begin at 11:30am. Lunch will be served at noon with the presentation to follow.
