Join us on April 30, 2026, for a presentation about Norfolk Southern’s emergency reconstruction of a bridge in Newport, Tenn., impacted by Hurricane Helene. Michael Sondles, Freight Rail Program Manager for HDR, will present about Hurricane Helene’s impacts to Norfolk Southern and the restoration of critical rail service to a community devastated by one of the worst natural disasters in recent US history. Norfolk Southern’s response team was able to quickly react to the bridge damage and ultimate collapse, and return the bridge and line segment to service in March of 2025, just 6 months after the flooding.
This event will be held in the community room at 10856 Reed Hartman Hwy. Enter through the main entrance and proceed to the elevators or staircase on your left, which will take you down one floor to the lunch area and the community meeting room, which will be on the left past the bathrooms.

Speaker Bio: Michael Sondles is a Freight Rail Program Manager for HDR in the Cincinnati office. He has over 13 years’ experience in the freight railroad industry and is a professional engineer in multiple states. Mr. Sondles is an active member of AREMA, serves on Committee 10, and has presented at the annual conference several times. His educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Purdue university. With experience in both technical and management roles, Mr. Sondles areas of expertise include structural design, construction management, program management, and business development.
